Radius of hollow (RoH) is the depth of a cut into the bottom of a skate blade. It's also known as the hollow grind, groove, or ground radius. It is the radius of the circle the blade makes.
How it works
- A smaller radius creates more grip in the ice, while a larger radius creates more glide
- A deeper radius causes the skate blade to penetrate deeper into the ice, which increases resistance to gliding
- A shallower radius allows the skate to retain enough edge to stop and turn
Factors that affect RoH
- Skating style: Forwards often prefer a smaller radius, while defensemen prefer a larger radius
- Weight: Heavier skaters may need a larger radius
- Ice hardness: Harder ice may require a smaller radius
- Preference: Some skaters may prefer a deeper radius because it feels like they're in control
Standard or most common
- Hockey players: 1/2"
- Goalies: 1/2" although many like very sharp skates at 3/8"
- Figure skaters: 5/8"
Highlighted red section are the most common and recommended cuts in most U.S. ice rinks. The taller the line the more popular the cut is.
